In brief

Choose a corporate training provider by testing five areas: diagnosis, programme relevance, facilitator evidence, application design and follow-up. Registration status and logistics matter, but they do not replace a clear explanation of what participants should do differently after the programme.

1. Start with the required outcome

Ask the provider to restate the business problem and desired workplace behaviour. “Improve communication” is too broad. “Supervisors give clearer shift instructions and confirm understanding” is useful enough to design and evaluate.

2. Check whether they diagnose before prescribing

A responsible provider should ask about the audience, current performance, constraints and evidence. If the problem is caused by unclear authority, broken processes or workload, training alone may not solve it.

3. Match the facilitator to the subject

Look for relevant work experience, training credentials and evidence of facilitation with comparable audiences. A strong general profile does not automatically prove expertise in every catalogue topic.

4. Ask what “customised” means

Useful customisation changes cases, practice, terminology, level and delivery—not only the logo on the slides. Agree which client materials may be used and how confidential information will be protected.

5. Look beyond attendance

Ask how participants will practise, receive feedback and apply the skill. For important behaviours, discuss manager involvement, follow-up activities or coaching before delivery.

6. Verify HRD Corp statements precisely

Being a registered training provider and having a particular programme eligible under a claimable-course process are related but not identical statements. Ask for current programme information and confirm grant requirements through official HRD Corp channels.

Questions for the proposal meeting

  • What evidence do you need before recommending a programme?
  • What will participants do during the session?
  • Which facilitator will deliver, and why are they suited?
  • What is tailored and what remains standard?
  • How will managers or sponsors support application?
  • Which claims or programme registrations can you verify?
